Growing Support: Enhancing Mental Health and Wellbeing in Farming Communities

“We need to shift from a reactive to a proactive approach, embedding mental health support into the agricultural sector at every level. Farmers who invest in self-awareness and mental health build resilience that benefits their businesses, families, and communities.”

Victoria-based dairy farmer and rural mental health counsellor, Sarah Crosthwaite, has travelled across 11 countries to explore innovative ways to address mental health challenges faced by farmers. Supported by the Gardiner Dairy Foundation, Sarah’s Nuffield Australia report delves into the unique pressures on the agricultural sector, including financial instability, isolation, and environmental uncertainties.

Sarah’s research reveals how international programs and initiatives are making a tangible difference in supporting farming communities. For example, New Zealand’s Farmstrong program uses a strengths-based approach to promote resilience and wellbeing, while Norco’s Mental Health Support Officer initiative offers farmers tailored and accessible mental health services.

Sarah notes that improving mental health outcomes for farmers requires systemic and individual-level changes. “A positive mindset won’t stop a drought or stabilise commodity prices, but it equips farmers to navigate challenges with resilience and resourcefulness,” Sarah said. “Through my travels, I’ve seen how programs that combine practical education, financial literacy, and community support can transform the mental health landscape for farming families.”

During her travels, Sarah observed the critical role of financial literacy in reducing stress. Many farmers face compounding challenges from financial instability, with limited tools to manage this pressure. Programs like Canada’s Healthy Minds, Healthy Farms and Australia’s Farm Owners Academy demonstrate how sound business planning and risk management can significantly improve both mental health and farm viability.

Sarah’s report provides actionable recommendations, such as increasing access to telehealth services, fostering community-based support networks, and implementing graduate programs to embed mental health professionals in rural areas. She also advocates for educating agricultural influencers and keynote speakers to use supportive and stigma-reducing language when addressing mental health in farming communities.

“Farmers work in one of the most demanding and unpredictable industries,” Sarah said. “By prioritising mental health and making support accessible, we can build resilient farming communities that are prepared for the challenges of modern agriculture.”

Sarah is excited to share her report, which is now available online, with farming communities, industry stakeholders, and mental health advocates across Australia and globally.

Sarah presented her research at the 2024 National Conference in Launceston, Tasmania, and a link to her presentation can be found below.
