Investigating and measuring the value of policy

Originally from a farm in Western Australia, Tyson has been a journalist and editor in the rural media and industry advocate.

Tyson currently works for a large agribusiness, and his interest and expertise is firmly in agricultural representation and policy and driving practical outcomes for the sector. This is an important element when considering a policy response to drought and other crises.

The study topic will look at various agriculture industry organisations around the world to better understand how they set their priorities and how they allocate their resources and how they judge their policy successes.

“Key areas I want to explore in this research include policy outcomes, policy creation, time and resourcing, independence and representation type, with a consideration of global benchmarking,” Tyson said.

“I believe gaining global insights on this work will be useful and timely for drought preparedness and broader agriculture policy development in the Australian context.”

Tyson’s research will largely focus on western countries with similar policy structures and challenges to Australia such as the United Kingdom, European Union, United States of America and Canada.

“I’m excited by this opportunity and bringing my learnings back to support Australian agriculture and add value to farmers’ resilience and sustainability journey.”
