Building understanding and literacy to inform carbon decision making
Phillipa (Pippa) Jones splits her days between managing a 485 hectare (1200 acre) mixed farming operation and working with farmers to build capacity in, and improve the condition of, natural resources. While both carbon markets and carbon neutrality have a growing body of research behind them, farmers need a high level of specialised knowledge to understand and interpret the resources currently available.
“The sheer volume of information available can serve to complicate the topic for farmers,” says Pippa.
To improve options for farmers seeking to better engage in this space, Pippa is looking to address current knowledge gaps and learn from overseas experiences as a 2024 Nuffield Scholar.
“Carbon markets and natural capital can provide new income streams for farmers in a changing climate, amongst record high land prices, rising interest rates and increased biosecurity risk, however there is also an increased focus on the benefits of being carbon neutral,” adds Pippa.
Her study will include identifying barriers, opportunities, responsibilities, and risks – but also, crucially, how resources for building carbon literacy can support and encourage producers to investigate carbon options on farm.
Pippa plans to travel to Canada and the European Union, where carbon markets and emissions trading schemes are more established, as well as Argentina and South Africa.
