Incubating Radical Change: A Blueprint for Agricultural Transformation

“In an increasingly complex and uncertain operating environment, radical change is both a necessity and an opportunity. This report offers a strategic framework to support agricultural producers in navigating transformation, fostering innovation, and building resilient, sustainable enterprises.”

Queensland agribusiness leader Tess Bitmead has released a new report offering practical strategies to help producers embrace transformation and lead with confidence.

A 2020 Nuffield Scholar supported by the Yulgilbar Foundation, Tess explored how agricultural businesses can adapt to a changing world by aligning mindset, strategy, and operations.

Her research highlights the importance of having a clear vision. That vision must be matched by thoughtful planning and consistent action. Businesses that align their goals with day-to-day operations are better placed to adapt and grow.

Tess draws on management tools like Kaplan and Norton’s Balanced Scorecard and Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model to create a practical framework for change. She says transformation starts with mindset. Producers must challenge long-held beliefs and be open to new ways of thinking.

Land use is another focus. Tess urges producers to view land not as a static asset, but as a dynamic resource. She explores how diversification and infrastructure investment can help businesses unlock value and secure long-term financial sustainability.

The report also positions succession planning as a powerful tool for growth. Tess encourages intergenerational collaboration and flexible business models that allow younger generations to engage, contribute and lead.

Her report, “Incubating Radical Change Within an Organisation”, provides a blueprint for producers who want to lead change — not just react to it.

Tess presented her findings at the 2023 Nuffield National Conference in Perth. Her full report is now available on the Nuffield Australia website, alongside a video of her presentation
