Media release. Terry Hehir awarded OAM

Immediate-past chair of Nuffield Australia, Terry Hehir, has been recognised for his outstanding service to the dairy industry in the Queen’s Birthday 2014 Honours List

Mr Hehir has been awarded the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division.

Terry was awarded a Nuffield Scholarship to travel in 1994, studying environmental pressures on intensive dairying and the impact of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (predecessor to the World Trade Organisation).

Terry has contributed strongly to the organisation in the years since, serving as chairman of Nuffield Victoria from 1997 to 1999, and chairman of Nuffield Australia from 2011 to 2013, the latter role demanding at least a day a week commitment.

He has also been a regular host of overseas scholars at his Wyuna farm in northern Victoria, and has always shown a strong willingness to share information with all farmers.

Terry has been an office bearer in dairy industry organisations for 30 years continuously. His service includes:

Inaugural chairman of the Waterpool Co-operative since 2012 and inaugural chairman of the Australian Dairy Conference from 2002 to 2009, remaining on the board until 2013. Inaugural chairman of the Organic Dairy Farmers of Australia Co-operative since 2002 and trustee of the Organic Federation of Australia from 2009 to 2012. Served as chairman of both the Australian Mastitis Council and the Kyabram Branch of the United Dairy Farmers of Victoria and was also vice-chairman of Global Dairyfarmers for many years.

Nuffield Australia awards scholarships annually to primary producers to travel the world investigating a topic of importance to themselves and their industry. Applications for the 2015 Nuffield Australia scholarship program opened on the 1st April, and run through to the 30th June 2014, for travel in 2015.
