Media release. Nuffield improves business and leadership skills

Despite being at the start of his 2014 Nuffield Scholarship experience, Queensland cotton farmer Nigel Corish already considers the program a ‘life-changing experience’.

Nigel, from Goondiwindi, is currently on the Global Focus Program (GFP), travelling with fellow Australian and international Nuffield scholars on a world tour of agriculture.

“I’m part of the China focus group, so we’re travelling to the Philippines, China, Canada, the Netherlands, Washington DC, France and Ireland,” he says.

Earlier this year, Nigel attended the Nuffield Contemporary Scholars Conference, with current scholars from around the world visiting Sydney and Canberra to talk agriculture.

“It’s been excellent to step outside the cotton industry and away from the farm – you can learn a great deal from other industries, it’s been quite remarkable how the same challenges keep coming up and the issues they face are the things we face at home too.

It’s not all about travelling, it’s about improving your business and improving leadership, so the benefits are amazing,” Nigel says.

Importantly, Nigel says with planning and organisation, farmers can make time to step outside their business and family to do a Nuffield Scholarship.

“I thought no way would I be able to get organised enough, obviously having a young family and family commitments at home, it’s a huge personal commitment, but put your hand up and give it a go – it’s a life-changing experience and you’ll never look back,” he says.

Following the GFP, Nigel will spend a further 10 weeks studying soil and fertiliser nutrition in irrigated cotton crops.
