Maggie Jarret
2025 Nuffield Scholar
Extracting maximum value from ESG reporting
Maggie Jarrett will investigate how small businesses in the agriculture industry can capitalise on environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting, which is increasingly imposed by larger operators in their supply chains.
Maggie says agricultural businesses can gain value from capturing ESG data if they take a broader view, instead of simply focusing on meeting compliance and legal mandates.
“As ESG reporting is still in its infancy there is opportunity right now to understand and create a reporting system that is focused on collecting the right data from primary producers in a streamlined way,” she said.
“A good ESG system can benefit both farmers and consumers across economic, social, and environmental areas.
“ESG reporting done properly and focused on the benefit of the producer will also benefit industry bodies, as well as agriculture’s public image and market access.”
Maggie’s scholarship is supported by Agrifutures Australia.
“I’m looking forward to visiting primary producers and agricultural businesses who value add their product.
“I’m also keen to visit SMEs that have minimised paperwork and are capturing data that can be used for ESG reporting in a simplified form that has then become a business tool.”
Maggie hopes to visit countries with strong sustainability programs, such as Ireland, as well as to step away from the agriculture industry and visit technology businesses like Xero.
“I’m curious to see what these other businesses are doing and how we could utilise these programs to help with data management and the streamlining of data collection.”
Maggie will also investigate ESG from a consumer angle, to learn about businesses which have utilised the data they collect through the ESG process to successfully educate consumers on their products.
Maggie works for her family’s business, See Saw Wines. They grow wine grapes and sheep and run a 900-ton wine processing operation.
Maggie handles ESG reporting and exports for the operation, which is organically certified.
See Saw Wines exports to the United States of America, Vietnam, Norway and Japan.
