Diversity rules at pre-eminent farming scholarship organisation

From meeting innovative farmers around the world to drilling down into a research topic that will make a real on-ground difference, Nuffield scholarships offer a world of opportunities.

The organisation gives Australian primary producers and managers the chance to travel the world, firstly as a group on the renowned ‘Global Focus Program’, and then individually to investigate the best agricultural practices in the world.

Recent years have seen a wide range of scholars from industries as diverse as horticulture, fisheries, beekeeping, graingrowing, date production, sugarcane and pastoralists, to name just a few.

Nuffield is taking applications for the 2016 scholarship program from the 1st April through to the 30th June 2015, for travel in 2016. A $30,000 bursary is provided to successful applicants to carry out their study over a two-year period.

For Kalannie (WA) graingrower and 2014 scholar Bob Nixon, the program has had a profound impact both personally and professionally.

“2014 was a life-changing year for me – firstly, the Global Focus Program provided a big picture on global agricultural trends, before I embarked on my own ten weeks of individual research.

The challenge of removing myself from the family business for an extended time gave great perspective to evaluate my role and the dynamics of our set-up.

Nuffield provides a growing opportunity – understanding the world changing around you and being inspired by other industry people and practices, while keeping in sight the basics of your business at home,” Bob explains.

There will be four Global Focus Programs in 2016, which will travel to destinations such as Europe, North America, Brazil, China, Kenya, India and Qatar.

Scholars then travel for a further 10 weeks by themselves, to drill down into a research topic of interest to them and of value to industry.

Importantly, Nuffield Australia scholars also join a powerful international network with farmers from the UK, Ireland, France, Zimbabwe, Canada, New Zealand and the Netherlands.

Applications open on the 1st April and close on 30th June 2015, for travel in 2016. Successful applicants will be announced at the Nuffield Australia National Conference in Albury this September
